Stem Cell Therapy for Arthritis, Injuries, and Athletes
Tampa, Saint Petersburg and Clearwater, FL
Dennis M. Lox, MD,, a Sports and Regenerative Medicine physician in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, uses regenerative medicine as a non-surgical way to treat arthritis, injuries, and athletes with sports injuries of all kinds. Dr. Lox utilizes the patient’s own blood to concentrate the blood’s platelets, a technique called “Platelet Rich Plasma” (PRP), and the patients own stem cells. Both PRP and stem cells cannot get to injured or arthritic areas in significant quantities to heal these areas on their own. They require the experienced hand of a physician to inject them. Even non-union fractures and avascular necrosis (AVN) have been treated in this fashion. Non-union is when a fracture does not heal properly.
Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a condition where the blood supply to a bone has been disrupted and that area of bone dies. AVN patients are often told there is nothing that can be done except joint surgery. Dr. Lox can concentrate and place the PRP and stem cells directly to injured areas by a simple injection. There is no down time, unlike with surgery. Additionally, there is no progression of arthritis, as surgery is a form of trauma, and trauma leads to progression of arthritis. This makes utilizing the patients own cells appealing to many individuals looking for alternatives to surgery.
