Shoulder Pain: Arthritis, Supraspinatus, Slap Tears, Stem Cells
Shoulder pain is a frequent problem for which patients are seeing surgeons, getting MRIs and having surgery. Studies however have shown the long term success of shoulder surgery versus no surgery are the same. Not very comforting for most people. Other studies have shown that people without shoulder pain may have abnormal MRIs. These include glenohumeral arthritis, supraspinatus tears, rotator cuff tears, and labral tears. This has been shown to also occur in the spine, hips, and knees. Therefore, it is extremely important to evaluate each patient in the context of their history, physical examination, and correlation with imaging studies such a MRI. It then becomes clear that surgery may provide no relief or short term relief given this scenario.
Regenerative Medicine therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Stem Cell Therapy may aid in healing or delay the degenerative cascade. Studies have shown that regeneration of tissues may occur following stem cell treatment. This is the ultimate goal. Regeneration is not possible with traditional surgery, in fact trauma has been shown to accelerate surgery, and surgery is indeed trauma. Delaying degeneration or arthritis development is a cornerstone in successful long term management or injury and joint damage. When shoulder pain persists, investigating Regenerative Medicine is an option.
