Avascular necrosis (AVN) has also been referred to as osteonecrosis, aseptic necrosis, and ischemic necrosis. AVN occurs when the blood supply to the bone has been disrupted (avascular), and this leads to bone cell death (necrosis). AVN may occur in any bone, however, the hip is the most common. Trauma is the leading cause, however many other associated risk factors are known. These include high dose corticosteroids (cortisone) and excessive alcohol use.
