Partial Achilles Tendon Tear Treatment with Stem Cells
Dennis M. Lox, MD, has treated numerous Achilles tendinitis and partial tears with stem cell therapy. Patients are looking for alternatives to surgery. Achilles tendon surgery is painful and associated with a lengthy recovery.
Dr. Lox has seen Tennis players return to play in months. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been used, however, it’s capacity to heal tears may be limited compared to stem cells. Stem cells have a greater capacity for regeneration, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) works through the growth factors released from the concentrated platelets.
A famous case of using Regenerative Medicine for Achilles tendon tear was San Francisco 49er’s Quarterback Steve Bono. Bono tore his Achilles’ tendon had surgery, then the following year tore the other legs Achilles’ tendon. Football legend and former 49er’s Quarterback Joe Montana told Bono PRP that had been used on his Horses. Bono ended up having the PRP and avoided surgery.
Dr. Lox knows not all cases may be managed with Regenerative Medicine, however even if unsuccessful the alternative is the same: surgery. A growing number of patients are becoming aware of PRP and stem cells and are viewing it as a viable alternative to surgery.
