Maryland Snowboarder Opts for Stem Cells
Maryland Snowboarder Opts for Stem Cells with Dr. Lox for Hip AVN, after being told he would need a hip replacement for avascular necrosis (AVN).
After discussing the pathophysiology of avascular necrosis (AVN), the application of stem cells for this disorder was discussed. AVN results from a loss of blood flow to a region of bone that then becomes necrotic (bone cell death). When an athlete develops AVN, their sports career is in jeopardy. Surgical options usually involve core decompression or recommendations for a total hip replacement. Both procedures are associated with significant downtime, with no guarantee of the return to sport. Many sports such as professional football, are ended with total hip replacement (Bo Jackson). This particular patient was an avid snowboarder and racquet sports competitor. After consulting Dr. Lox, he made the decision to try stem cell therapy and preserve future options for surgery, and if the stem cell therapy was successful, he would continue with his sports participation. His treatment with stem cells was without problems. He is now improving and hopeful for the future.
