From Turkey to Florida, Patients Consult Dr. Lox for AVN
Dennis M. Lox, MD, a Sports and Regenerative Medicine Specialist sees a variety of patients. Being among a select group of doctors who have practiced regenerative medicine for several years, Dr. Lox has the advantage of seeking counsel from patients and physicians from near an far away. Recently a Turkish doctor and patient sought Dr. Lox’s advice on stem cell therapy for avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip. This patient had bilateral AVN meaning both hips were afflicted. Avascular Necrosis (AVN) occurs when the blood supply to the bone is disrupted. This results in cellular death to the bone or necrosis. This patient had excessive cortisone treatment which sometimes leads to the development of Avascular Necrosis ( AVN). The doctor sought Dr. Lox’s consul on regenerative medicine therapies to aid in recovery. The question was the role of Platelet Rich Plasma ( PRP) versus Stem Cell Therapy. After reviewing MRI’s and x- rays Dr. Lox conferred that significant bone loss had occurred in the hip joint and stem cell therapy should be considered. Stem cell treatment for AVN is increasingly being considered as alternatives to surgery in AVN cases.
