Knee Rheumatoid Arthritis and Stem Cell Therapy
Knee Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system literally attacks its own joints and tissues. A patient with multi-joint rheumatoid arthritis presented with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. Many joints had already become frozen and disfigured. Her problem was now affecting her knees, so walking was becoming limited- resulting in decreasing quality of life.
She had researched regenerative medicine to a great extent having failed to improve with all the common medications prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis. Her research had led her to stem cell therapy as an alternative treatment for autoimmune disorders.
Stem cells are not only regenerative cells they are immunoregulatory cells as well.
It is the ability to modulate the immune system that has led to much research into stem cells.
This is why another persons (allogenic) cells can be injected into another person, because of the immune regulation effect.
Based on this knowledge she elected to have stem cell therapy directed towards her knees to attempt to preserve mobility and further joint degeneration. She tolerated the procedure with no difficulty. The first week showed a diminished pain response consistent with immune regulation and blocking the effects of the deleterious by products of autoimmune disorders. The future for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune disorders with stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine is promising
