Knee AVN in a Mexican Soccer Player: Stem Cell Opinion with Dr. Lox

Knee AVN in a Mexican Soccer Player: Stem Cell Opinion with Dr. Lox

Knee AVN in a soccer player is difficult. The use of stem cells to treat AVN has been utilized, and Dennis M. Lox, MD, a stem cell expert has treated soccer players with knee AVN, and other types of AVN before. Dr. Lox has employed stem cell treatments to keep these soccer players on the field. Avascular necrosis (AVN) occurs when the blood supply to a region of bone becomes impaired, in this case the knee. This results in bone cell death or necrosis. When the knee is involved, the distal aspect of the femur or the top portion of the tibia is involved. Rarely with trauma, both bones may be affected with AVN. When AVN occurs their may be pain, swelling, difficulty with weight bearing, and playing soccer is generally not possible. Often it may be misdiagnosed early on especially after trauma. It is only after the knee fails to heal in an adequate time or the pain appears to be worsening, rather than improving that avascular necrosis (AVN) may be suspected. X-rays are often normal early on, and MRI’s have become the gold standard to pick up regions of necrotic bone early on. The most significant aspect of AVN is when the necrotic region of bone collapses, and then a rapid secondary degenerative arthritis may ensue. This can quickly destroy the knee joint, ending the soccer players career, and often leads to recommendations for total knee replacement. After knee replacement surgery, few elite running sport athletes return to their game, especially football and soccer. The legendary two-sport professional football and baseball player, Bo Jackson sustained trauma to his hip during a football game. Bo Jackson was later diagnosed with hip AVN, however he was unable to avoid hip replacement surgery, and Jackson never played professional football again. If Regenerative Medicine strategies such as Stem Cell Therapy are employed for the treatment of knee AVN early on before joint collapse occurs, stem cells may be a viable option. Dr. Lox has treated numerous soccer players with AVN and stem cells and they returned to play soccer. All athletic injuries must be considered personalized medicine. This is also the case with stem cells and athletes. Dr. Lox is a expert in Sports and Regenerative Medicine. Understanding each patients unique situation and goals are paramount to success.
