Dr. Lox Discusses Hips, Knees, Ankle and the Spine: Weight Loading

knee pain

Dennis M. Lox M.D., is an expert in Sports and Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Lox has a special expertise in the effects of aging, trauma, prior surgery on degenerative arthritis or osteoarthritis. Unlike the shoulder, being overweight doesn’t directly affect the shoulder.

Weight on Your Joints

The force of extra weight is transferred downward. Thus the hip joint, knee joint and ankle joint bear downward forces with weight gain. The spine is affected as well due to downward pressure, and an enlarged abdomen pulls, has an outward and downward force. Unfortunately, it is not a pound per pound increase in downward force, it is magnified by 5 fold. Meaning for every extra 20 pounds gained it is akin to a 100 pound back pack the individual carries. This is why there is more wear and tear or acceleration of the progression of degenerative arthritis.

Joint Arthritis

Arthritis is not static, it gets worse with time. So, when considering Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Lox discusses with each patient different factors that are unique to them, that may influence the rate of progression of degenerative arthritis. Being told by an orthopedic surgeon, when it gets bad enough, you will know, and a hip or knee replacement surgery is recommended is not the way to go. The problem with that logic, waiting for it to wear out, without actively changing course will inevitably result in joint destruction and the need for hip or knee replacement surgery. Patients need to become better informed, and understand how the body works, and also how it breaks down. Then they can make better informed decisions about their care. Being passive in today’s health care system is problematic.

Seeking The Right Doctor

Dr. Lox always spends time discussing all the issues of each patients needs. No two patients are alike, thus there is no cookie cutter template, one size fits all for everyone. That is what informed patients need to look for when selecting an experienced Regenerative Medicine physician. Dr. Lox is passionate about

helping his parents. That requires time talking to the patients. All your questions should be answered, and doing some research ahead of time is helpful. Having lectured around the world to University Professors and experts in the field of Sports Medicine, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy, Dr. Lox is not only able to speak to University Professors, but also explain in detail to patients with no medical background, by using easily understandable analogies, and common sense.

Arthritis, Exercise and Weight Loss

Slow weight loss is typically recommended over a 6 month period for goals that are realistic 10 or 20 pounds. Starving yourself leads t rebound weight gain. Working together with Dr. Lox and developing a specific game plan individualized for each patient is called personalized medicine. It does work. Having a doctor to help along the way is not just smart, it is like having a coach, personal trainer, and all around expert in all aspects that are meant to help each patient reach their goals.
