Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of The Hip Treated with Stem Cells
Dennis M. Lox, MD, is an expert in the evaluation and treatment of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip with stem cell therapy. Dr. Lox is an expert in Sports and Regenerative Medicine and has treated many types of AVN including the hip, with stem cell therapy.
The hip is the most common joint afflicted with AVN. Avascular necrosis or osteonecrosis occurs when the blood supply to a region of bone becomes impaired, leading to bone cell death or necrosis. This area of necrosis may collapse, leading to a rapid hip joint degeneration.
Often this secondary degenerative arthritis that occurs leads to a recommendation of hip joint replacement surgery. Patients are becoming increasingly aware of regenerative medicine applications such as stem cell therapy as an option to hip replacement surgery.
There are a variety of factors involved in the evaluation of hip AVN. Dr. Lox carefully evaluates each patient as no two patients are alike, and therefore treatment recommendations should be specific for each patient’s particular needs, desires, and goals. Hip AVN is most commonly associated with trauma.
However, it may arise spontaneously, which is known as idiopathic AVN. Many other risk factors for AVN exist. Hip AVN may also be seen in both hips or may involve multiple other joints, such as the hip and knee. Careful evaluation of each patient is a goal Dr. Lox strives to achieve optimal success.
