Ankle Pain Treated with Stem Cell Therapy

Ankle pain may be extremely problematic for patients. Often conservative treatment measures do not provide lasting relief, and surgical options may not be welcome especially in the younger patient and the athlete. Surgery such as ankle fusion is irreversible. This has profound implications for younger patients as the loss of mobility may impact adjacent joints in the future leading to accelerated wear. Most sports careers invoking the lower leg will be ended by an ankle fusion. Stem cell therapy may offer an option for these patients. The associated wear of adjacent joints surrounding an ankle fusion may develop quickly or remote from the injury or following ankle surgery. Arthritis in the adjacent foot areas or above the ankle, such as in the knee, hip, or spine may develop. These areas are commonly afflicted with arthritis and may develop in an escalated fashion after trauma to the ankle joint occurs.
Sports in younger athletes starting their sports careers can often be ended with a substantial ankle injury. These ankle injuries in younger athletes may be considered for stem cell therapy. These patients should be carefully evaluated for their injury, current, and future goals and needs. Many such ankle injuries including AVN, may be treated with stem cell therapy in select cases. Ankle Avascular Necrosis (AVN) has limited conservative options. Surgery is often debilitating as ankle replacement may not be successful, and ankle fusion is limiting as well. AVN of the ankle may be a consideration for stem cell treatments. Many types of ankle problems from ankle arthritis to AVN have been treated with stem cells. The right treatment should be discussed with a specialist in Ankle and stem cell treatments.
