49ers Lose Wide Receiver to Knee Injury

The San Francisco 49ers lost wide receiver Mario Manningham for the rest of the season after an MRI of his knee revealed a devastating combination tear of the anterior cruciate (ACL) and the posterior cruciate (PCL) of his left knee. This occurred following a low tackle during the 49ers loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
The combination tear will require knee surgery and extensive rehabilitation.
Traditional surgical techniques have incorporated the use of regenerative medicine strategies such as biologics, Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP), cellular therapy, scaffolds, autologous and allogenic ligament grafts all to enhance the outcome, and expedite the recovery.
Repair responses to injury that utilize regenerative medicine, have been studied extensively in research in the last decade. Finding ways to enhance tissue healing and recovery are the cornerstones of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Platelet-Rich-Plasma and cellular therapy are been used in a wide application of medical problems besides musculoskeletal injuries. The knee is a frequently injured sports injury, and ways to augment or find alternatives to knee surgery are of great interest.
