60 Year old With Old Hip AVN and Knee ACL

A 60 year multi sport athlete developed left hip AVN, after a soccer injury. He had some type of hip surgery, always had mild residual symptoms, but able to continue playing sports. 11 years ago he had a right knee ACL repair, again able to continue with sports, however, now he has some increasing left hip pain, milder right hip pain, and pain in his right knee.
Post-traumatic AVN
Trauma, is the lading causation factor for AVN, avascular necrosis, it is sometimes referred to as osteonecrosis or aseptic necrosis. Many professional athletes have had their career derailed due to this severe injury. Surgery, in this patient at age 12, after a hockey injury is somewhat difficult to determine exactly what was done 48 years ago, as their is no medical, records However, surgery, trauma, AVN, and decades of use, translate to wear, or propagation of degenerative arthritis of the hip joint. As human’s walls upright, it is fainy common for changes of degenerative arthritis to occur decades later, in the non-traumatized hip, especially in an active over many decades. This patient was extremely active, multi-sports high impact to his hip, joint. He was a weightlifter, CrossFit, runner, and even injured his opposite knee ACL ligament.
Contralateral Hip Degenerative Arthritis
It is nearly allows the case to have some degree of degenerative hip arthritis in the opposite hip after a traumatic hip avascular necrosis injury , with hip surgery at age 12, due to repetitive use from sports decades later. This is true for running, and even simply exercises or sports. Rugged athletes, such as this patient, participated in mixed martial arts and boxing, for which he was extremely good at. A hard puncher, he had a excellent knock out punch, yet training, kicking the heavy bag places an accumulated toil on all joints lower and upper extremity. He also had shoulder surgery, for which he states he had excellent recovery, and no residual pain, yet.
Right Knee ACL Tears 25 Years Later
Obviously, having another injury to another weigh bearing joint complicates long term prognosis for sport’s participation and degenerative arthritis progression. A contralateral injury to a hip and knee makes it more problematic to engage in running type exercises and sports over long periods of time.
Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Options
Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy options can be employed by a case by case evaluation. All factors that may affect the outcome must be discussed with the patient. This is how to achieve the best results and realistic expectations.
