A Gymnast goes for College Scholarship after Wrist Stem Cells with Dr. Lox
A gymnast who injured her wrist failed to improve. She sought consultation with Dennis M. Lox, MD, a stem cell expert. Her story for a teen athlete was not comforting. She envisioned herself getting a college scholarship in gymnastics.
Her story began with an injury to her wrist while in the course of a gymnastic routine. Thinking it would resolve with time, she instituted the usual sports medicine principles of rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications. However, she kept having wrist pain and couldn’t resume gymnastics participation. She eventually had wrist surgery. This did not alleviate her wrist pain. A second wrist surgery was then performed. Again she continued to complain of wrist pain, and the inability to return to gymnastics. Failing to improve after two wrist surgeries the Orthopaedic hand surgeon felt there was nothing further to offer her, and recommended she not return to gymnastics. This was not what she and her family desired. They researched alternative treatment strategies, and found Dr. Lox and stem cell therapy. Dr. Lox has helped other injured athletes return to their chosen sport, and go onto obtain a collegiate sports scholarship. This was not a new situation, and Dr. Lox understood the frustration, and the desire to return the gymnast to her chosen sport, and thus try and obtain her goals. Athletes are often extremely goal oriented, helping them achieve their goals is a rewarding experience.
A few short months after her first wrist stem cell treatment she reported 92% improvement. Excellent, however for a gymnast 8% pain in a wrist still can affect performance. This may be enough that they will not be able to compete at their highest level or outperform another competitor. This may be the difference in obtaining a college athletic scholarship. Dr. Lox and the patient elected to add an additional treatment measure, and at the next scheduled appointment with Dr. Lox, she reported 100% pain relief. At this juncture, she has returned to gymnastic competition and is hopeful to achieve her goals. She is thankful she is now in a position to at least try and obtain her goals and compete.
Dr. Lox notes treating athletes with stem cell therapy should be performed with an individualized approach tailored to each patients needs, goals, expectations, and sport. Dr. Lox has utilized stem cell therapy in professional athletes with wrist pain as well. By using this type of patient-oriented treatment approach the possible outcomes may be realized.
