Patient From India with AVN of both Hips
A patient from India with AVN hips consulted Dennis M. Lox, MD, for Stem Cell Therapy. The case was complicated as extremely high doses of cortisone compounds were given intravenously over several year periods for Lupus. Both hips had developed Avascular necrosis as the outcome (AVN hips). Several possible mechanisms for loss of blood supply exist for AVN which is followed by systemic corticosteroid usage. This comprises of accumulation of fat inside the bone marrow. It is not uncommon to have both hips involved with AVN occurring after excessive cortisone use.
The patient from India did not have bone collapse around the area, which carries a grimmer prognosis. The patient was keen on receiving Stem Cell Therapy as she was still young in her 20’s. Hip replacement in younger patients carries the risk of not being able to have repeat replacement of hip joint later in life, and if there is an adverse event such as the hip replacement surgery ending in failure or having a bad outcome, this, in turn, affects the patient’s mobility and lifestyle for practically their entire life. Choosing Stem Cell Therapy is a decision that should be made with an expert in regenerative therapy.
