Patient consults Dr. Lox for HIP AVN Stem Cell treatment
Dennis M. Lox, MD, an expert in Stem Cell Therapy was consulted by a patient from far away from Bangladesh for avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip. Avascular necrosis (AVN) has also been referred to as osteonecrosis, aseptic necrosis, and ischemic necrosis. AVN occurs when the blood supply to the bone has been disrupted (avascular), and this leads to bone cell death (necrosis). AVN may occur in any bone, however, the hip is the most common. Trauma is the leading cause, however many other associated risk factors are known. These include high dose corticosteroids (cortisone) and excessive alcohol use. It is unclear why some who receive corticosteroids and some who consume excessive alcohol get AVN while others do not. Stem Cell Therapy has been used to treat AVN or osteonecrosis. The advantage of using stem cells is most surgical options carry long recovery times and often it is a joint replacement that is recommended. Many patients wish to avoid this, which is why stem cells are an attractive alternative. Stem cells can in some cases revascularize the necrotic region and can create new bone cells. They may also stabilize the area of the joint, as rapid secondary arthritis may develop if the joint collapses.
