Avascular Necrosis Stem Cells
Avascular Necrosis Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine. Avascular Necrosis (AVN) also known as osteonecrosis or ischemic necrosis, is a condition that may lead to rapid deterioration or degeneration of the joint involved. It arises when the blood supply to the area of bone becomes disrupted (avascular or ischemia) leading to bone cell death (necrosis).
The most common joints involved are the hip, knee, and shoulder. However almost any boney region may be affected. Common causes for the ischemia to the bone are trauma, idiopathic (unknown), large doses of steroids and alcohol consumption, however it is not known why some who receive steroids or consume excessive alcohol do or do not develop AVN.
The worst scenario with Avascular Necrosis is if the area of bone necrosis collapses, then the joint will degenerate rapidly. This is what happened to the great two-sport professional athlete Bo Jackson. The inciting event to Bo Jackson developing AVN was a tackle in which his hip was was injured. It was initially thought that Bo Jackson’s injury was a hip strain, unfortunately before he was diagnosed with AVN, his hip collapsed and he needed a total hip replacement.
Dennis M. Lox, MD, has used stem cells and regenerative medicine and has been treating AVN in patients who wish to avoid joint replacement or fusion with Stem Cell Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). Dr. Lox has treated many patients with AVN including shoulder, hip, knee, wrist, ankle, and foot AVN. Dr. Lox sees the need for early and prompt diagnosis of AVN and with early intervention before joint collapse occurs the devastating effects of the secondary joint degeneration may be avoided. These situations may be ideal for PRP and Stem Cell Therapy. Patients with AVN are advised to seek proper consultation for their condition early on to allow for more therapeutic options, and avoid surgery if possible. Stem cells and regenerative medicine are excellent options for many, but there comes a point where it is too late. Early diagnosis is key.
