Avascular necrosis (AVN)

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is a complicated and frustrating condition, which has been treated with stem cell therapy. Sometimes referred to as osteonecrosis, an area of bone losses blood supply and as a result, the region of bone dies or becomes necrotic. Trauma is the leading cause of avascular necrosis (AVN). However, AVN may arise spontaneously, which is referred to as idiopathic AVN.

Avascular necrosis is complicated by the fact that the necrotic region of bone may collapse leading to rapid joint degenerative arthritis. This often leads to recommendations for joint replacement surgery. Any bone can potentially develop AVN but the hip is the most commonly affected joint, followed by the shoulder and knee. Dr. Lox has also treated ankle and wrist AVN. Severe cases can present in multiple joints in a diffuse pattern. This is generally the result of a disease process or severe affliction of AVN due to multiple high dose steroid treatments.
